What you really need to record or stream console gameplay — and what you can skip until later.

When we started posting gameplay videos, we spent far too long on gear we didn't need. If you're starting out, these three pieces matter most.

1. Capture

A capture card is how console gameplay reaches your computer. Choose one that supports the resolution and frame rate you play at, and passthrough so you can play on a TV with no lag.

2. Voice

Viewers forgive average video but not bad audio. A USB microphone is the quickest way to improve it. Position it a hand's width from your mouth and add a pop filter if you can.

3. Control

A programmable key pad lets you switch scenes, mute your mic and trigger sound effects without alt-tabbing. It is a luxury at first, but you will feel the difference after the first week.

What can wait

  • Fancy lighting
  • A second monitor
  • A green screen
