Fixing controller stick drift: causes and what you can do

Your character walks on its own? Stick drift is common, usually fixable, and sometimes a reason to upgrade.

Stick drift — when the on-screen camera or character moves without input — is one of the most common controller problems. It's irritating, but it's often fixable.

Why drift happens

Most sticks use a small potentiometer that wears down over time. Dust, grime and heavy use make it worse.

Try these first

  1. Recalibrate the controller in your console or Windows settings.
  2. Clean around the stick with a dry brush or compressed air.
  3. Update controller firmware.
  4. Raise the deadzone in the game's settings.

If it keeps happening

Cleaning with isopropyl alcohol can help, but it's a temporary fix. If the stick is worn, repair or replacement is the long-term answer.

Preventing drift

  • Don't store the controller under heavy objects.
  • Keep it clean.
  • Consider controllers with hall effect sticks, which don't wear out the same way.

When to replace

If your pad is out of warranty and heavily worn, an upgrade makes more sense than repeated repairs. A replacement battery door can also fix flaky battery contacts — worth checking before you give up on a controller.
