The Xbox 360 pad remains one of the best-supported controllers on PC. Here is how to set one up in minutes.
Even after more than a decade, the Xbox 360 controller layout is the default for PC games. If you have one in a drawer, you can use it again.
What you need
- A wireless Xbox 360 controller (or a wired one)
- A USB wireless gaming receiver for Windows if you want wireless play
- Two AA batteries or a charge pack
Setup
- Plug the receiver into a USB port.
- Install the driver if Windows doesn't do it automatically.
- Press the receiver's connect button, then the controller's.
- Open the Windows game controller settings to test the buttons.
Troubleshooting
- If the controller doesn't pair, remove the batteries and try again.
- If games don't detect it, check whether they support XInput; most do.
- Third-party receivers may need drivers from the manufacturer.
Upgrading
If your controller is worn out, a newer Xbox Wireless Controller works on PC over Bluetooth and needs no receiver — including special editions such as the Minecraft Creeper design.
